Hyunyeop KIM

Hyunyub KIM, who majored in sculpture, held a solo exhibition at Gallery MAC in 2014 as the fifth recipient of the ‘GALLERY MAC Young Artist Award,’ a curated exhibition supporting emerging and young artists. It is not easy to continue working and grow as a full-time artist after graduating from art school, but KIM has persisted for nearly 10 years, consistently producing work and presenting his results through various curated exhibitions, steadily pursuing his path as an artist.

 

In the 2014 exhibition at Gallery MAC, KIM humorously expressed the "childishness" and "foolishness" of war and violence by likening the act of war to a child playing with toys. In the linear flow of time, humans, like interlocking gears, live together, and the series of events they create become history. KIM creates new forms and narratives by assembling and painting fragmented materials, such as toy parts or mechanical components, a process that mirrors the ecosystem of our lives. Focusing on the image of modern people who seem to move like machine parts in an increasingly complex society, KIM discusses the fundamental loneliness and solitude of humanity. Yet, he paradoxically emphasizes that, despite this, we possess inherent value as human beings simply by existing.

 

 

 조각을 전공한 김현엽 작가는 갓 대학을 졸업한 2014년 신진, 청년작가를 지원하는 기획 전시인 ‘맥화랑미술상(GALLERY MAC Young Artist Award (or Prize)’展의 다섯 번째 수상자로서 맥화랑에서 기획 초대전을 가진 바 있습니다. 미술대학 졸업 후 작업을 손놓지 않고 전업작가로서 성장하기란 쉽지 않지만, 작가는 약 10년의 시간 동안 작업을 지속하고 다채로운 기획 전시를 통해 결과물을 선보이며 작가로서 묵묵히 그의 길을 가고 있습니다. 2014년 맥화랑에서 진행되었던 전시에서는 전쟁이라는 행위를 마치 어린아이가 장난감을 가지고 전쟁놀이를 하는 것에 빗대어 전쟁과 폭력에 대한 ‘유치함’과 ‘어리석음’을 조각과 설치작업으로 우스꽝스럽게 표현했습니다.

 

선형적으로 흘러가는 시간 속에서 톱니바퀴처럼 맞물려 살아가는 인간과 그들로 구성된 사회, 일련의 사건은 조각조각 모여 역사가 됩니다. 작가는 장난감 부품이나 기계 부속품과 같은 조각난 재료를 서로 붙이고 칠하며 새로운 형태와 서사를 만들어내는데, 이러한 작가의 작업 과정은 우리 삶의 생태계와 닮아있습니다. 점점 복잡해져가는 사회 속에서 기계 부품처럼 서로 맞물려 움직이는 듯한 현대인의 모습에 주목한 작가는 인간의 근본적인 고독과 외로움에 대해 이야기하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 존재 그 자체로서의 가치를 지닌 인간임을 역설합니다.
