Jungmyung KIM (b. 1945)

Born in Busan in 1945, Jungmyung KIM studied Sculpture at Hongik University and received an M.A. in Art Education from Keimyung University. From 1982 to 2008, he taught at the Department of Fine Arts, Pusan National University, while maintaining an active artistic practice. Over the past five decades, KIM has developed a distinctive artistic language that transcends the boundaries of sculpture, painting, objects, and installation.

Emerging from the context of Korean Experimental Art in the late 1960s and 1970s, KIM challenged conventional notions of sculpture by incorporating everyday objects, humor, and irony into his practice. His seminal installation After Lunch on the Grass (1975)—inspired by Édouard Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe—is regarded as one of the landmark works of Korean Experimental Art. Rather than reproducing the iconic painting, KIM transformed it into an installation composed of the traces of an ordinary picnic, dissolving the boundaries between art and everyday life, image and physical space.

Throughout the following decades, KIM continued to expand his artistic inquiry through a number of distinctive series. The Red series explored the fluid relationship between painting and sculpture, while the Finger series transformed the human body into a metaphor for civilization, consciousness, and communication. In works such as Yellow Line, A Thousand Faces, Book, Bone, Tongue, Pocket, and Speech Bubble, he employed found objects and everyday materials to investigate language, memory, consumer culture, and the human condition through wit and conceptual play.

In recent years, KIM has continued this exploration through his ongoing series Artistic Gene and Homage to Them. Revisiting the legacy of art history, these works reinterpret the visual languages of great masters while exploring artistic lineage, creativity, and the transmission of cultural memory. Extending the experimental spirit that has defined his practice since the 1970s, his recent works position art history itself as a living, evolving dialogue rather than a fixed canon.

Today, Jungmyung KIM is recognized as a pivotal figure whose practice bridges Korean Experimental Art, early postmodernism, and contemporary art. His work offers a distinctive perspective on how art history can be continually reimagined through humor, appropriation, and everyday experience.

김정명 | Kim Jungmyung (b. 1945)

1945년 부산에서 태어난 김정명은 홍익대학교 미술대학에서 조각을 전공하고 계명대학교에서 미술교육학 석사학위를 취득하였다. 1982년부터 2008년까지 부산대학교 예술대학 미술학과 교수로 재직하며 교육과 창작을 병행했고, 반세기 넘게 조각, 회화, 오브제, 설치를 넘나들며 한국 현대미술의 독자적인 조형 언어를 구축해 왔다.

1960~70년대 한국 실험미술의 흐름 속에서 활동을 시작한 김정명은 전통적인 조각의 개념을 해체하고 일상의 사물과 유머를 예술의 언어로 끌어들이며 예술과 삶의 경계를 새롭게 질문했다. 대표적인 설치작업 〈풀밭 위의 식사 이후〉(1975)는 마네의 〈풀밭 위의 점심식사〉를 동시대의 일상 공간으로 전환시킨 한국 실험미술의 대표작 가운데 하나로 평가되며, 예술과 현실, 이미지와 공간의 관계를 새롭게 제시하였다.

이후 작가는 〈빨〉 시리즈를 통해 평면과 입체, 회화와 조각의 경계를 실험했으며, 〈손가락〉 시리즈에서는 인간의 신체를 문명과 자의식의 은유로 확장하였다. 또한 〈Yellow Line〉, 〈천인의 얼굴〉 , 〈책〉, 〈뼈〉, 〈혀〉, 〈주머니〉, 〈말풍선〉 등 다양한 시리즈를 통해 언어와 기호, 인간의 사고와 문명에 대한 질문을 유머와 아이러니로 풀어내며 자신만의 조형세계를 확장해 왔다.

최근에는 〈예술인자(Artistic Gene)〉와 〈그들에게 경의를(Homage to Them)〉 연작을 통해 예술사의 거장들과 그들의 조형 언어를 자신의 시각으로 재해석하며, 예술의 계보와 창조의 본질에 대한 탐구를 이어가고 있다. 초기 실험미술의 문제의식에서 출발한 그의 작업은 오늘날 예술사를 현재의 시선으로 다시 읽어내는 과정으로 확장되며, 한국 아방가르드와 포스트모더니즘, 그리고 동시대 미술을 연결하는 독창적인 작업 세계를 구축하고 있다.
