Overview
Line-Pieces, Hyeeun KANG Solo Exhibition

A solo exhibition by artist Hyeeun Kang (b. 1956) will be held from April 18 to May 16, 2026, at GALLERY MAC in Haeundae, Busan. This exhibition offers an in-depth look into the artist’s distinctive painterly language, developed over many years, and explores how material, gesture, and the accumulation of time converge into a condensed pictorial field. After more than a decade of experimentation and refinement, Kang has established her own unique visual vocabulary by developing a technique that draws thread-like lines from oil paint, forming the foundation of her practice.

The artist applies controlled pressure to masses of paint, extruding lines of varying thickness, which are then repeatedly layered onto the canvas to construct the image. This process recalls the silkworm spinning its cocoon, or the interweaving of warp and weft in textile production. During her working process, Kang concentrates deeply, regulating her breath and channeling energy through her core to the tips of her fingers. This repetitive and highly focused act approaches a meditative, almost ascetic practice. The intersecting and merging lines of color form new layers through repetition, gradually building a multi-layered structure and depth within the canvas. Viewed up close, the abstract lines and materiality of the paint become prominent; from a distance, however, the flow of color coalesces into evocative, landscape-like imagery. In this way, the accumulated lines, colors, and physical thickness of paint generate a sensorial field in which luminous color and tactile depth expand the surface of painting into a space condensed with time and labor.

This exhibition invites viewers to reconsider painting not merely as representation, but as a trace of process in which bodily rhythm and the density of time are embedded. Hyeeun Kang’s works are the result of performative repetition and material accumulation, guiding viewers into a contemplative space where sensation and thought intersect. Set against the springtime atmosphere of Dalmaji Hill in Haeundae, the exhibition offers an opportunity to encounter serene yet densely layered painterly landscapes shaped by the artist’s accumulated time and breath.
